Leadership & Experience

Peter Ford, a preeminent corporate tax attorney with nearly 30 years of experience in tax, law, accounting, and finance, is entering private practice in hopes of helping the “little guy (or gal)” navigate the increasingly complex world of tax.  Having worked in nearly every aspect of finance, tax, and accounting- including the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, multiple Fortune 500 companies, and two “Big 4” accounting firms, Peter offers clients an unparalleled depth and breadth of expertise.

Peter regularly consults on the timing of income and deductions; tax accounting issues in mergers and acquisitions (including asset acquisitions); the tax treatment of costs associated with tangible or intangible property (including acquisition costs); deferral and acceleration of revenue; long term contracts subject to section 460; installment sales; casualty and theft losses; and tax audits, controversies, appeals, and collections.

Experienced Tax Attorney

Prior to entering private practice, Peter was a managing director with a “Big 4” accounting firm, where he assisted with tax structuring, planning, and implementing complex tax positions for large multinational companies, including numerous Fortune 500 companies.  He handles a number of different tax controversy matters, including IRS examinations, appeals, liens and levies, and collection due process cases.

Service with IRS Office of Chief Counsel

For nearly eight years prior to that, Peter worked for the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, most recently as a Senior Counsel.  In that capacity, he had signatory authority for the government for matters under his jurisdiction and authored the regulations under section 451, concerning the timing of revenue recognition and the timing of income recognition related to advance payments, as well as numerous pieces of sub-regulatory guidance.

Academic Teaching & Professional Involvement

As an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University’s Carey Business School and the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, Peter taught various finance, accounting, or tax courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. 

He has authored numerous articles and is a frequent speaker at the American Bar Association Tax Section.  Peter is a member of several professional organizations including American Bar Association, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, International Business Brokers Association, and National Bar Association.

Education & Credentials

Peter received a Master of Laws (LLM) in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center, having received a Doctor of Jurisprudence from West Virginia University College of Law. He also received a Master of Public Management from the Heinz School of Public Policy, Carnegie Mellon University, and a Master of Science in Management from the Krannert Graduate School of Management at Purdue University. He received a Bachelor of Science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Peter is licensed to practice law in Maryland and the District of Columbia and is a veteran of the United States Navy.
